DieumarciMbokani and Ben Malango scored the goals either side of the half-time interval to give DR Congo a 2-0 win at home to their West African opponents.

DR Congo knew that only a win would be able to get them into the final round of the African qualifiers ahead of the World Cup 2022 tournament on Qatari soil at the expense of opponents Benin Republic. At the end of 90 minutes, DR Congo were able to achieve their target of beating Benin Republic and sealing a place in the third and final round of the World Cup 2022 qualifiers in the African region.

Mbokani set DR Congo on the way to victory with a tenth minute penalty for the first goal of the game. The goal from Mbokani was enough to give DR Congo a slim lead at the half-time break at the Stade des Matyrs in Kinshasa. Mbokani was able to score his fourth goal of the qualifiers.

Malangosettled the nerves amongst the DR Congo fans with the second goal for the hosts on 74 minutes. A draw from the game would have taken Benin Republic ahead of DR Congo.

DR Congo will join nine other teams in the third round of the African qualifiers ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022 tournament in Qatar as they battle it out for five spots.

Africa has been represented by five teams since the 1998 FIFA World Cup tournament in France and the next edition in Qatar won’t be an exception.
